In 2010 golf's Ryder Cup is being held in Wales for the first time ever. Games will be played at the new Ryder Cup Course at the Celtic Manor Resort, not far from Cardiff. The course is the first ever to have been specially designed for the Ryder Cup tournament, and has been five years in the making.
The new Ryder Cup golf course at the Celtic Manor Resort is officially open in October 2007, but was ready for play in July 2007 and until October a limited number of tee times is being made available. There are just 12 tee times per day, between 10am and 11.50am, when guests taking the Ryder Cup Experience can try their hand and give their thoughts on the 7,493 yard, par 71 course.
The Celtic Manor Resort has two other golf courses. There's the Roman Road course which was recently the host venue for the Celtic Manor Wales Open golf tournament. This opened in 1995 and was voted 'the top inland course in Wales' by Golf Monthly Magazine. The course was also the host venue for the 2005 and 2006 Celtic Manor Wales Open, and for the 2005 and 2006 All*Star Cup. This has featured celebrity golfers including Catherine Zeta Jones, Michael Douglas, Ronan Keating, Chris Evans, Jodie Kidd, Bruce Forsyth, Alice Cooper, Meat Loaf and Jane Seymour.
The Montgomerie course is also new and was opened in July 2007. It was designed by the Ryder Cup legend Colin Montgomerie, the 8-times European Number 1 player, and is 6,371 yards and a par 69. The front nine of the Montgomerie golf course take as their framework the starting and closing holes of the old Wentwood Hills championship course. The back nine have been devised from scratch, with input from Colin Montgomerie to bring in dramatic tee shots over valleys and some exhilarating downhill shots.
