Betws Inn, Wales: Great Little Places
The new free guide to hotels in Wales, Great Little Places to Stay 2008/9, is available and recommends the best small Welsh hotels, guest houses, inns and farmhouses.

Guides to hotels in Wales or anywhere else don't always list the little gems, the guesthouses and inns that are off-the-beaten-track, the small restaurants with rooms, the personal bed and breakfasts, or even the best country house hotels. That's why a copy of the free guide to small Welsh hotels and other accommodation, the Great Little Places guide, is well worth the cost of a phone call or a click on the website to get hold of.

Wales: Great Little Places to Stay has been going for 15 years, and its free accommodation guide lists 57 properties throughout the country. They all meet the publisher's criteria of being both affordable and rather special, whether it's a country house hotel, a stylish boutique-style townhouse, a farmhouse, a restaurant with rooms, an inn, bed and breakfast, or the gastro-pub that Chris Evans owns.

Here's a short sample of the kinds of properties that this guide to Wales hotels and other accommodation includes:

Bach-y-Graig

There are only 3 rooms in this grand red-bricked house, which was built out of the gatehouse of the 200-acre dairy farm near St Asaph in North Wales. There's woodland and a wildlife trail nearby, and it's only a short drive to Chester, not much further to Liverpool, while the beaches and castles of the North Wales coast are almost on the doorstep.

Betws Inn

The Betws Inn is no longer an inn, though it used to be the village pub. Now it's an extremely comfortable and characterful 3-room b&b at Betws Garmon, not far from Caernarfon and close to the Snowdonia National Park.

Crug-Glas Country House and Restaurant

This grand Georgian house is in a 600-acre cattle and cereals farm, in Abereiddy, near St David's and the stunning Pembrokeshire National Park. Has just 5 luxury ensuite rooms.

Ffarm Country House

The Ffarm is what you expect of a country house hotel – a proper mansion-style home, which dates from 1706, although it's only been a country house hotel since 2007. There are seven ensuite rooms, whose names like Burgundy and Champagne are an echo of the hosts' former involvement in the wine trade. There are wine tastings too, and the old open fires and chandeliers combine with every modern comfort. It's in a peaceful village not far from Abergele on the North Wales coast.

Ffynnon

This 4-room luxury boutique townhouse is in a 19th-century rectory in Dolgellau, and combines the old (Victorian fireplaces) with the new (Wifi). It's been highly praised by the British travel media.

Llanerch Vineyard

Stay on a vineyard? Is there a better idea? The award-winning Llanerch Vineyard, whose wines are enjoyed in the British Houses of Parliament, also has nine rooms to rent, its own fine dining restaurant, and it's only a short drive into Cardiff and the Millennium Stadium.

Newbridge Inn

British DJ Chris Evans owns this gastro-pub, or restaurant with rooms, in Tredunnock, near Usk. It's handy for several golf courses, a sport Chris Evans is a bit keen on, in particular the luxury Celtic Manor Resort where the 2010 Ryder Cup will be played.
