First Organic Hotel in WalesThe Organic TYF Eco Hotel Opens in St David's in Pembrokeshire
The TYF Eco Hotel opens for business in St David's, Pembrokeshire, and claims to be the first organic hotel in Wales. Food Miles are out and 15-Mile Menus are in.
The first organic hotel in Wales has opened for business in St David's in Pembrokeshire. The TYF Eco Hotel opened its doors for guests on 23rd August 2007. Based in a converted windmill, the intimate 12-bedroom TYF Eco Hotel has been granted organic certification from the Welsh Organic Scheme. This means that almost all the food and drink served in the hotel is guaranteed organic, and inspectors from the Welsh Organic Scheme will visit the hotel several times a year to ensure that standards are mantained. The TYF Eco Hotel is fortunate that there are many organic farms and smallholdings within the local area, enabling it to include some '15-mile' dishes on its restaurant menus. In these dishes most of the ingredients come from within 15 miles of the hotel, which not only supports local farmers and growers, it reduces the Food Miles and ensures the freshness of the ingredients. The restaurant is also open to non-residents. The TYF Eco Hotel is also a member of the 1% of the Planet scheme, with 1% of its annual turover being donated to worthy environmental causes each year. A Green Dragon environmental management system is in operation, which constantly monitors the hotel's environmental performance. The hotel is also run on green electricity, sourced from the wind, sun or running water, with provisions in place to reduce the building's carbon dioxide emissions. Water conservation features are also used and a full recycling program is in operation, which guests are requested to co-operate with. No pesticides are used in the hotel grounds either. *Eco Hotel HistoryThe hotel dates back to 1806 when the windmill tower and some of the nearby buildings were first built by George Llewellyn and called Felin Wynt (the Welsh for windmill). The windmill tower still stands as a distinguishing landmark and is now Grade II Listed. Some of the original mill stones can also be seen in front of the hotel. The mill was operational in grinding corn until 1904, and then when a new owner took over it was converted into a small hotel called the Twr-y-Felin, or Mill Tower. * Each of the 12 bedrooms at the TYF Eco Hotel in St David's has been equipped, thanks to Freeplay Energy with wind-up and solar powered EyeMax radios and wind-up Indigo lanterns. Rooms include single, twin, double and family rooms, and next door to the hotel is Ty Hir Cottage, which can sleep up to 8 people. Not all rooms are ensuite so check before booking if that is important to you. Prices start at £30 (US$60) per person per night, but for up-to-date prices and online booking visit the hotel website by clicking here. *
