Wales start their 2007 Rugby World Cup campaign against Australia at the Millennium Stadium, and play Japan, with a quarterfinal play-off too. Hotel rooms will go fast

There are four matches in Cardiff during the 2007 Rugby World Cup, starting with Wales against Australia on September 15th and ending with a quarter-final play-off on October 6th. The winners of Pool C, which on form should be New Zealand (sorry, Scotland), will play the runners-up in Pool D, which could be France or Ireland, or possibly as an outside shot, Argentina. With mouth-watering matches like that to look forward to, demand for hotel rooms will be high, so start looking. Here are some suggestions for Cardiff hotels at the more budget end of the price range.

The Big Sleep

Bute Terrace

Owned by movie star John Malkovich, the opening of the Big Sleep showed that you can have high-style hotels without high prices. Book ahead for bargain rates at this boutique-style hotel, spectacularly converted from a 1960s office block. It's been called one of the best budget boutique hotels in the world, and some of the rooms have some great views over the city too. Moderate price.

Cathedral Hotel

53 Cathedral Road, Pontcanna

The lovely Cathedral Hotel is just a few minutes walk from Cardiff Castle past Bute Park, and has a fitness centre bar and its own restaurant. There are 39 rooms and one self-contained apartment that sleeps 5 people. Great place and a moderate price.

*

Cardiff Ibis

Churchill Way

A fairly bland but very safe choice, and it couldn't be more central, just a few minutes walk from the Millennium Stadium. There are 102 rooms, restaurant, bar and they start serving breakfast at 4am, if you have a late night! Surprisingly inexpensive.

NosDa Budget Hotel

53-59 Despenser Street

Right by the river, you can almost fall out of bed and roll to the Millennium Stadium from here. At the moment it's being transformed from what they call a 2-star hotel into a 5-star hostel, and there's a really good restaurant, the Tafarn, the Tafod nightclub, a BBQ area, internet and loads of other facilities. Cheerful and cheap.

*

Cardiff Backpackers

98 Neville Street

Short walk from the city centre, this is a great-value place to stay and comfortable too despite its low price. There's internet access, a BBQ area, big-screen TV and a DVD library. Highly recommended. Cheap.
